Rooted in the structural and stroke logic of Hanzi (Chinese characters), this font family reinterprets Paul Renner’s core ethos of rationality, simplicity, and geometric order, giving the family a progressive and experimental voice for branding, headlines, posters, and short text.
Futura®100 Chinese carries forward the modernist spirit of Paul Renner’s original designs for Futura® Latin. It draws stroke inspiration from early Chinese avant-garde monoline lettering and early typefaces to bridge China’s early typographic exploration with a contemporary design context. Rooted in the structural and stroke logic of Hanzi (Chinese characters), it reinterprets Futura’s core ethos of rationality, simplicity, and geometric order, giving the family a modern and experimental voice.
In its stroke design, Futura®100 Chinese deliberately moves away from the calligraphic instrokes and outstrokes commonly found in traditional Heiti (Chinese sans-serif typefaces), shaping each stroke in a more direct and crisp manner. This does not mean, however, that the traditional forms of Chinese characters have been overlooked. Extensive research was carried out into the strokes and structures of Lishu, Xingshu, and Kaishu scripts, as well as modern Chinese lettering, and reinterpreted these sources through a new design approach. For complex character components, we boldly reorganised their structures through symmetry and simplification, removing unnecessary details. Corners, angled terminal cuts, and smooth geometric arcs both respond to the traditions of Chinese character forms and echo the distinctive geometric DNA of Futura®100 Latin.
Across all six weights, the family carefully balances structural stability, even counter spaces, and stroke clearance to navigate the challenges of complex Chinese characters. However, each end has its own distinct focus: in the Bold weight, strokes are meticulously tucked and adjusted to ensure legibility and avoid visual crowding; in the Light weight, the emphasis shifts to preserving structural integrity and perfectly distributed whitespace.
Together, the Futura®100 Chinese family delivers a consistent typographic texture, opening up a wide range of potential uses, including headlines, branding, posters, and short text.
The original Futura® was the ultimate in geometric sans serifs, reducing a design category to its most concentrated concept and form. Futura®100 is the epitome of minimalist geometric typefaces. In concert with Bauer Types, TypeTogether has brought together a highly talented team of designers to create Futura®100 Chinese. Because the team has had access to Renner’s original designs, the result is a typeface family that is faithful to the original design intentions, retaining a constructed but warm quality.
Futura®100 Chinese is available in six weights as well as a variable font that ranges from light to bold. It joins 22 other scripts to serve more than 90% of the world’s population: Arabic, Armenian, Bengali, Chinese, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Georgian, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Greek, Hebrew, Kannada, Khmer, Lao, Latin, Malayalam, Myanmar, Odia, PanAfrican Latin, Tamil, Telugu, and Thai.
For those seeking to use Futura®100 Chinese in conjunction with other scripts in a multiscript environment – such as a combination with Latin – steps have been carefully taken to ensure its harmony with all other scripts across the Futura®100 family. Futura®100 Chinese extends Futura’s modernist spirit across writing systems, offering a cohesive, contemporary typographic voice for global, multi-script communication.
What was new and groundbreaking a century ago has become a pivotal reference in the evolution of type design and an important foundation of modern graphic design. The significance of Futura®100 lies not merely in its geometric construction, but more fundamentally in its structural qualities. This structure gives the typeface enduring strength and vitality, allowing Futura to remain widely used even after a century. This spirit of originality is carried into the design of Hanzi, creating forms that reflect the character of our own time. Through the reinterpretation of Futura®100, Paul Renner’s modernist legacy will continue to evolve and become part of the everyday practice of more designers around the world for years to come.
