A giant figure eight and Temeraire: Le Grand 8 festival’s 2017 identity

Since 2010, the Rouen, France-based cultural collective HSH Crew has organised an annual cinema night at the local l’Omnia cinema, where they screen eight animated short films. In the 2017 edition, Julien Lelièvre, who has been responsible for the design of the festival since its first edition, used a large number eight as the event’s primary visual asset. Temeraire was chosen as the typeface for all festival communication.

Steeped in English lettering traditions, Temeraire, designed by Quentin Schmerber, rescues disparate styles from echoes in time. This serif font family is meant for beholding text in books, magazines, and large formats rather than being able to ignore it.
